What is an internal combustion engine doing in a restaurant dining room?

And what did Felice Matteucci and Pellegrino Artusi have in common?

A century, probably, the nineteenth century of the bold colours of Van Gogh and Monet, the soft forms of Canova, the modern and poweful music of Puccini, Paganini and Wagner, and the nineteenth century of great scientific discoveries that revolutionised the world in various fields, from medicine to technology, from chemistry to mechanics and...  the science of cooking and the art of eating well, the classic cookbook that collects more than 800 regional recipes and represents a fresco of Italian society at the end of the nineteenth century, with anecdotes and observations.

The Barsanti and Matteucci Foundation and the Il Giglio Restaurant are celebrating Felice Matteucci's birthday together with four special days dedicated to the inventor from Lucca who, together with Eugenio Barsanti, designed and built the internal combustion engine, the precursor of motor technology, and a special menu inspired by nineteenth-century cuisine and recipes from the era of Pellegrino Artusi.

During these days, a working model of the internal combustion engine, based on the original designs of the two scientists, will be on display inside Il Giglio restaurant.
